Our story

In June 2021, a group of passionate Somali women came together with a shared vision: to create a brighter future for young women in Somalia by opening doors to opportunities in the energy sector. This vision gave birth to our organization, originally called Activate Her. As we grew and our mission expanded, we evolved into what is now known as Somali Women in Energy Sector.

Our Mission

At Somali Women in Energy Sector, our mission is clear: to mentor, train, and empower young Somali women, equipping them with the skills and confidence they need to thrive in the energy industry. We focus on developing both the essential soft skills—such as leadership, communication, and professional development—as well as the critical technical expertise needed to excel in renewable energy and other energy-related fields.

Our Evolution

As our organization grew, so did our understanding of our mission. We realized that the name Activate Her no longer fully encapsulated the scope of our work and the depth of our commitment to the energy sector. To better reflect our purpose and the impact we aim to achieve, we rebranded as Somali Women in Energy Sector. This name more accurately represents our dedication to empowering Somali women to lead and excel in a field that is vital to the future of our country.

How We Empower Women

• Mentorship: We connect young women with experienced professionals who provide invaluable guidance, support, and industry insights. Our mentors are committed to nurturing the next generation of female leaders in the energy sector.
• Training Programs: We offer comprehensive training that covers both technical skills in energy and renewable resources, as well as essential soft skills like leadership and communication. Our programs are designed to prepare women to meet the demands of the industry and excel in their careers.
• Networking Opportunities: We have built a platform where Somali women in the energy sector can connect, share experiences, and support one another. This network fosters collaboration, opens doors to new opportunities, and helps women advance in their careers.
• Internships and Job Placements: We are proud to have facilitated the placement of more than 15 women in both paid and unpaid internships, providing them with crucial real-world experience. Many of these women have gone on to secure permanent positions in the energy industry, thanks to the skills and connections gained through our programs.

Our Collaborations

Our mission would not be possible without the support of our partners. We collaborate with prominent organizations such as AusAid, Power Africa, and the Ministry of Energy, Water, and Minerals of Puntland. These partnerships enable us to expand our reach, enhance our programs, and provide even more opportunities for the women we serve.
